Pencil Carving
Nice…
I just have to share a little joke on myself before I start writing on how to carve a wood spirit in a pencil. I used to teach a bit of wood technology which included wood identification. Well now, when a person like me gets a new piece of wood in his hand he will naturally cut a thin sliver off the end grain and get his old hand lens out for a closer look. Hummm I said, this looks like a diffuse porous tropical hardwood, it has some very shiny tyloses clogging the pores, I just don’t know what wood this could be!!! Boy was I ever embarrassed when I found that some pencils are now made from extruded plastic!!!
Geometric Sculpture – George W. Hart
Ingenious and nice…
As a sculptor of constructive geometric forms, my work deals with patterns and relationships derived from classical ideals of balance and symmetry. Mathematical yet organic, these abstract forms invite the viewer to partake of the geometric aesthetic. I use a variety of media, including paper, wood, plastic, metal, and assemblages of common household objects.
Temari – The Art of Japanese Thread Balls
These balls are very interesting.
A thousand year old craft from Japan, Temari is traditionally given as a gift. From humble beginnings as simple toy balls for children’s play, Temari create a magnetic effect on viewers today. As a spectacular decorating focal point, the puzzle of the design is mesmerizing. The concept is elegantly simple, the end result is simply elegant!

Sandsational Sand Sculpting
Chalk La Strada Festival
Nice street painting with chalk, an Italian tradition since the 16th century.
With over 95,000 in attendance at the festa, Chalk LaStrada in 2004 was very well attended and received much media attention.
Chalk La Strada is now planning a bigger and better event for our 7th anniversary year, more street surface area has been added for both artist squares and for the Little Italy Festa presented by PRECIOUS CHEESE. In addition to our chalking activities, the festa will have three stages for entertainment, more Italian food, beer and wine garden, a bocce ball tournament, and an Alpha-Romero car show.
Sand As Medium
Sand As Medium: a sand installation/sculpture/medium concept created by Jean-Pierre Hébert. A ball etches the sand, pulled invisibly by concealed means. This quiet, interactive installation can create beautiful sand etchings for the beholder enjoyment and for the spiritually inclined meditations.
Bathsheba Grossman – Mini Metal
I’m an artist exploring the region between art and mathematics, and this is my gallery and storefront. My work is about life in three dimensions: working with symmetry and balance, getting from a zero point to infinity, and always finding beauty in geometry.
That’s to say, I like to think about shapes, and occasionally I think up a new one, and usually they come out very symmetrical. I’m like any artist in that it’s difficult to explain exactly how and why this happens.
So I’ll write about my odd points as an artist. First, I’ve studied more mathematics than most. I don’t use it very directly — I’m absolutely not a mathematician, and most of my designs are drawn rather than computed — but it’s plain that my creative engine has a lot of math embedded in it.
